Georgian College Student Housing: A New Option in Barrie

Georgian College Student Housing: A New Option in Barrie

By Oren Singer · · 6 min read

Finding housing near Georgian College just got a little easier for students heading to the Barrie campus.

Sparrow has partnered with Georgian College and the Georgian College Students’ Association (GCSA) to expand off-campus housing options for Georgian students in Barrie. The partnership connects students looking for a place to live with local homeowners who have a spare room to share.

Instead of searching through listings and arranging everything on your own, students can explore private rooms through Sparrow and get support throughout the process.

A new housing option for Georgian College students

Georgian College already offers students several housing options, including on-campus residence and off-campus housing resources. But not every student will find a spot in residence or want to live in a traditional student rental.

That’s where homesharing can offer another option. With Sparrow, a student rents a private bedroom in a home where the homeowner also lives. Shared spaces may include the kitchen, living room, or bathroom, while the student has their own private room.

We are making use of existing space in Barrie while giving students another way to find Georgian College housing outside of residence.

The partnership launched ahead of the Fall 2026 semester and is designed specifically to expand housing options for Georgian students in Barrie.

How does Georgian College students housing partnership work with Sparrow?

The process is designed to be straightforward.

  1. Browse rooms near Georgian College

We’ve onboarded hosts in Barrie specifically to create more housing options for Georgian College students. Students can browse available private rooms through Sparrow.

You can also use the map on Sparrow to see exactly where a home is located and get a better idea of how it fits into your daily commute. It’s worth checking the trip to campus using Barrie Transit before deciding on a room.

  2. Find a home that fits

Once you find a room you’re interested in, you can learn more about the home and the host before deciding whether it’s the right fit.

Sparrow considers lifestyle and living preferences when matching students and hosts. This gives you a chance to find a home that works not just for your budget, but also for the way you prefer to live.

  3. Tour before you commit

Found a room you like? You can request a tour directly through Sparrow. Our housing coordinators and support team are here to help you through the process, including coordinating the tour and answering any questions you may have along the way.

A tour gives you the chance to see the home, meet your potential host, and get a feel for the space before making a decision.

  4. Sign a homeshare agreement

Once a student and host agree to move forward, the arrangement includes a written homeshare agreement. The agreement sets out the important details of the arrangement, including what the student can expect from the home and what is expected from both sides.
Having these details in writing means everyone starts the arrangement with a clearer understanding of what they’ve agreed to.

What makes this different from finding a room on your own?

There are plenty of ways to search for a room in Barrie. You can look through classified listings, social media groups, rental websites, or recommendations from friends. But finding a listing is only one part of the process.

You also need to figure out:

  • Who you’re renting from
  • Whether the room is actually available
  • What’s included in the rent
  • What the living arrangement will be like
  • What agreement you’ll be signing
  • Who to contact if you need help

With Sparrow, these parts are brought together in one process.

Hosts are ID-verified and onboarded before listing a room, while students and hosts can consider compatibility before moving forward. Students also have access to support from Sparrow throughout their stay.

What support do Georgian students receive?

Housing doesn’t stop being important once you’ve found a room. That’s why the Sparrow program includes support throughout the homeshare arrangement.

Students receive:

  • A written homeshare agreement
  • Tenant coverage
  • Support from a Sparrow customer success team member
  • The opportunity to build Canadian credit through monthly rent reporting
  • A host matching process based on lifestyle and living preferences

For a student who is new to Barrie, having someone to contact when questions come up can make the experience much easier.

What about safety?

Safety is an important part of finding Georgian College student housing, particularly when you’re moving into someone else’s home.

Sparrow verifies the identity of hosts before they list their rooms. Students and hosts can also learn more about each other and consider whether the living arrangement is a good fit before committing.

The process is designed to give both sides more information before they move forward.

That doesn’t mean every homeshare will be the same. Every household has its own routines, expectations, and personalities. That’s why understanding the living arrangement before you move in matters.

A housing option for Barrie homeowners too

The partnership isn’t only about helping students find a room. It also gives Barrie homeowners a way to make use of an empty bedroom in their home.

Maybe your child has moved out and left a spare room behind. Maybe you have more space than you currently need. Or maybe you’re simply interested in sharing your home with a student. Through Sparrow, homeowners can list their available room and receive support with the process, including matching, agreements, and ongoing support.

This creates a connection between two groups who need something from each other: students looking for housing and homeowners with space to share.

Why homesharing can work for students

For students, a homeshare can offer something different from a traditional apartment rental. You get your own private bedroom while sharing a home with a host. Depending on the arrangement, utilities and other household amenities may be included in the monthly cost.

You may also spend less than you would renting an entire apartment on your own. But the value isn’t only financial.

For someone arriving in Barrie for the first time, living with a local host can also provide a more connected way to settle into the community.
