Filling the Void: How homesharing
brought joy back into Andrea's
home.
Talking with Andrea, Host from Toronto
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Andrea, and my background is Hungarian. I came from the capital city, Budapest. I came to Canada and tried to make a life here. Then I raised four children. My last child just moved out. That gave me the idea to rent her room out because I just couldn't stand her room being empty.
Why did you decide to homeshare?
I felt the house was too big just because she left. It felt empty, and I wanted to fill a void, I guess. Then I thought, "Why don't I just help out someone who's in need?" And it worked out very well.
Why did you choose Sparrow?
Well definitely the background check and the matching are important. I let Sparrow know what I want, what I'm looking for, and they matched me in no time.
Tell us about your first experience with your housemate, Paula.
So first when she showed up at my doorstep, I opened the door and then I said immediately this is the one! She was very sympathetic and we started to talk and then that was it. She's from Germany. She was an exchange student and then she just gone back to Germany two days ago. She was an exceptional young, determined woman.
She was studying very hard. She made more than 100%, 150% on tests. She knows what she wants out of life. I really enjoyed her company.
Why should other homeowners consider homesharing?
Also, it helps out one person in need, and it doesn't require much from me. The room is there anyway. In Canada, I think it's helping during this high economic crisis taking place right now. Not everybody can afford full rent, especially students. So I think it's a great idea.
"It's good to know someone is coming home. It's not my daughter, but still, someone will be in the house when I'm not. Or I can chat with someone on a daily basis. And obviously, it provides extra income. Let's not leave that out."
Do you have a spare bedroom?
We help hosts safely rent out spare bedrooms to like-minded people.
